Spelling at Copley
At Copley, we use 'The Spelling Book' scheme by Jane Considine to support the teaching of Spelling.
Our Spelling timetable runs over two weeks. Week One is all about using an investigative approach to understand the principles underpinning word construction (phonemic, morphemic and etymological) and testing the hypothesis from the Groupings layer of the Spelling Rainbow. Pupils become word gathers, word sorters, word pattern finders, word interrogators and word concluders. Pupils analyse common errors, why these occur and what to do to ensure that the correct spelling embeds in our long-term memory.
Week Two provides opportunity for pupils to explore aspects from the Improving and Acquiring layers of the Spelling Rainbow.

Spelling Bee
Each year, during the Summer Term, we celebrate our spelling achievements with the 'Copley Spelling Bee'.
Pupils compete in House Teams to be crowned the winners of the annual Spelling Bee competition. Prizes are also awarded to pupils who demonstrate the greatest improvement in their spelling skills.
